Driver avoiding a crash slammed into motorcyclist, sending him off US 183

AUSTIN (KXAN) — A driver in a pickup truck who hit a motorcyclist from behind, which sent him flying off the freeway, told police they were trying to avoid a collision with another vehicle when the crash happened.

Austin police say on Tuesday, Dec. 12, the driver of the truck was traveling southbound on US 183 in the left lane when they swerved to avoid crashing into another vehicle. The pickup truck driver then entered the right lane, hitting, Robert Lance Trewitt, 62, as he was riding his BMW motorcycle. The impact knocked Trewitt off his bike and propelled him over the freeway.

Trewitt fell onto the frontage road, near Lazy Lane, around 25 feet below. He was taken to the hospital where he died the following day. 

Austin police have not indicated whether any citations or charges will be filed in this case.
