AUSTIN (KXAN) — The deadline for unpaid tolls has been extended to Sept. 9. after TxTag announced they will close their center Friday, Aug. 26 through the weekend.

Online paying options will also be down during this time starting Friday night, lasting until Sunday at 8 p.m. The TxTag Customer Service Center on 12719 Burnet Rd will reopen Monday at 8 a.m. after weekend maintenance.

Originally, the fees were due Aug. 31., but now commuters have an extra nine days to pay. The Texas Department of Transportation tells drivers they should try to pay the tolls before the deadline to avoid late fees and penalties.

In-Depth Coverage: TxTag Billing Issues

Last year, TxDOT officials said 30,000 people who had electronic TxTags on their windshields were billed incorrectly leading to a large amount of frustrated customers. Many drivers told KXAN in 2015 they were charged exorbitant late fees because they couldn’t get through to a customer service representative to dispute their incorrect bill.

After the billing issues, in February 2015, TxDOT decided to issue refunds and waive late fees on incorrect bills sent between June 2012 and July 2014.
