AUSTIN (KXAN) -- Chantel Session now visits her son's grave rather than hearing his voice. She decorates a memorial on a street in a part of town police say her son would not have normally visited. She waits for answers.

Chantel's son Lewis Lane, 20, died in April. Police and EMS crews arrived in South Austin to find Lewis shot in the middle of the street around 4 a.m. Crews took him to University Medical Center Brackenridge, where he died from those gunshot wounds at 5:09 a.m. The shooting that happened in the 7300 block of Gaines Mill Lane, near Manchaca Road and William Cannon Drive. Police spent the morning at the scene and a neighboring home looking for clues. Police said at the time they had not located any witnesses to the shooting, just people who heard the gunshots ring out.

Chantel remembers finding out her only son had died.

"Immediately I started screaming. It's like you don't believe that. You don't want to hear that," said Chantel. "All kind of things are going through my head. That was the worst day of my life. I mean, I've been through a lot. But that right there was the worst day of my life."

Police are learning more about that night, but they have yet to make an arrest. Still, investigators say they continue to follow leads.

"We know where he was. We know how he got about Austin," said Austin Police Detective Anthony Nelson. "We know that he was with other people when he was in that location on Gainesville."

Detective Nelson didn't want to speak in further detail to protect the investigation. However, he says they've also learned it would have been unusual to find Lewis in that neighborhood.

Lewis' mom remembers his time in church and his love of basketball growing up. Lewis also got in trouble with the law.

Court documents state he punched a man in the face in 2012 after stealing his cellphone. He was eventually convicted of theft and spent a few months in state jail. Lewis also had convictions for criminal trespass and other theft cases, but his family believes he was trying to change -- for himself and his daughter.

"That was my son, my only son," said Chantel. "I feel like he was taken from us before he was even given a chance to even really show himself, not to us, but show himself what he was capable of doing."

"I hope the family would understand that we're working. We're not slowing down. We're not closing our eyes. We're following up on every lead that we get. I'm very confident that this case will be solved," said Det. Nelson.

If you have any information about what happened, you can call the APD Homicide Unit at (512) 477-3588.
