Hundreds of Austin businesses hit with ADA lawsuits in 1 year

AUSTIN (KXAN) — A rash of lawsuits has swept through Austin in the past year, all brought by a single man and his attorney.

Each of the nearly 400 lawsuits allege discrimination related to violations of the Americans with Disabilities Act. The suits have hit everything from famed local restaurants to dozens of corner stores, bars and auto shops. Defendants could be settling for thousands of dollars.

The sheer number of lawsuits and escalating costs have local business owners asking, is this ADA lawsuit cottage industry about access for disabled people or money?

When KXAN started reporting on this last fall, the attorney refused to answer our questions about some powerful accusations. Now, on Friday at 10 p.m., KXAN Investigator Kevin Schwaller tracks down the lawyer who says he’s not targeting anyone, only fighting for accessibility
