Special Weather Statement regarding possible freezing rain

A frontal system will bring a chance for precipitation and colder air tonight. As the shallow layer of cold air moves into our north central area there will be a chance for a mix of freezing rain and rain. Chances for freezing rain will be north of a line from Rockspings to Kerrville to Florence, TX, including much of the counties of Llano, Burnet, Gillespie, and Kerr. If it does occur, the wintry precipitation would begin after 4 AM and little to no accumulation is expected. Precipitation will turn back to rain by about 9 AM.

…Cold temperatures may lead to light freezing rain across
portions of the Hill Country and southern Edwards Plateau early
Wednesday morning…

A cold front is bringing much cooler temperatures and a chance of
rain to portions of the Hill Country and southern Edwards
Plateau. Temperatures north of a Rocksprings to Kerrville to
Florence line may fall close to freezing as early as 4 AM and
could continue into mid morning. A brief period of light freezing
rain is possible Wednesday morning, but at this time, little or no
ice accumulation is expected. Travel impacts will be minor and
limited to bridges and elevated roadways should the temperature
drop to freezing.

Patchy light freezing rain or freezing drizzle across the Big Country this afternoon and evening. After midnight, a disturbance aloft may bring a second area of light freezing rain or drizzle, south of the Big Country. Only very light accumulations are expected, mainly a couple hundredths inch or less. Most areas will see trace amounts. Slick and icy conditions may develop on overpassses, bridges, and elevated surfaces.

…FREEZING DRIZZLE IS POSSIBLE ACROSS MUCH OF THE AREA TONIGHT
THROUGH WEDNESDAY MORNING…

An approaching disturbance from the west combined with a recent
cold frontal passage will bring a possibility for freezing rain
and drizzle. This could result in some slick spots, mainly on
elevated surfaces such as overpasses and bridges. Locations mostly
likely to be impacted before midnight will be across the Big
Country. After midnight, areas south of the Interstate 20 corridor
could be affected.

Otherwise, keep in mind that temperatures could be at or below
freezing for several hours so make sure to take care of sensitive
plants, pets, and pipes. Any ice that does accumulate may create
hazardous driving conditions so motorists are advised to take
extra time and exercise caution, especially on the bridges and
overpasses. At this point, only minor accumulations of ice are
expected. However, continue to monitor future National Weather
Service forecasts as additional updates will be possible.
