AUSTIN (KXAN) — Austin police say they’re searching for the person who shot and killed a 30-year-old woman at an east Austin apartment complex.
The shooting happened around 11:45 p.m. Tuesday in the parking lot of the Sixty 600 Apartments located at 6600 Ed Bluestein Blvd., next to Loyola Lane. When police arrived at the complex, they found Ebony Michelle Sheppard with a gunshot wound.
Austin-Travis County EMS say they took the woman to Dell Seton Medical Center, where she died an hour later.
In an early morning briefing, police said a witness called 911 alerting officers to the shooting, saying, “Someone just got shot!” Witnesses also told police the suspect dressed in a black hoodie took off in a white sedan from the complex.
Officer Bino Cadenas said, “Homicide detectives are speaking to them, they were able to give a lot of information to 911 advising that the suspect was still on scene and was trying to leave. And thankfully officers were close by to make [it to] the scene very quickly.”
Cadenas originally said a suspect was taken into custody early Wednesday morning, but detectives said after interviewing the individual, they determined they had “nothing to do with this incident.”
“He was detained because witnesses at the scene thought he was involved, but he wasn’t involved,” explained Sgt. Eric De Los Santos in a briefing Wednesday afternoon. “Given this information, we ask the public to remain vigilant since we don’t have a suspect in custody.”
De Los Santos was not able to say what led up to the shooting or if the victim and suspect knew each other. He also can’t say if the suspect is a man or woman.
Editor’s Note: APD’s initial briefing indicated the victim was 20 years old, but an updated released indicates she’s 30 years old.
