ABERNATHY, Texas (KXAN) —  A family near Lubbock is using their good fortune to bless their fellow church members.

In April, Eliberto and Anita Cantu won $177 million when their Mega Millions ticket matched all the numbers. Eliberto has been buying lottery tickets for 30 years and was in Arkansas for work in the spring when he bought the winning ticket.

Since the very beginning, the couple said they wanted to give back to Bethel Baptist Church, their church in Abernathy. Over the weekend, the church broke ground on a new building funded by the Cantus.

“But like anything else, there comes a time when you need to move up some. God saw fit through brother and sister Cantu that we would get a new building. Same place, same spirit, just a new building,” said Pastor Willie R. Bolton. “And so I feel excited that not only we get a new building but what we can do in that building.”

Construction will officially get underway next year. But helping one church isn’t all the Cantus have planned. The family has plans to build another church in a nearby town.
