MANOR, Texas (KXAN) — An elderly woman in a wheelchair and her husband managed to escape a fire that ripped through their Manor home thanks to the help of good Samaritans who drove by and saw the smoke.

The fire started around 2:14 p.m. Friday at a home in the 12800 block of New Katy Lane. The Austin Fire and Pflugerville Fire Departments were called in to help the Manor Fire Department.

Brittany Young says she called 911 when she noticed an unusual amount of smoke coming out of the chimney.

“I remembered it was an old couple staying there, I just didn’t know if they were in the house,” said Young. “I told my uncle and my cousin, ‘look come on let’s see if somebody’s in here.”‘

Sure enough when they knocked on the door Alex answered. Young said he was trying to put out the flames with small pots of water. They helped the couple out of the house just in time before the flames took over one side of the house.

“Nothing but the grace of God that’s all I can say because God led us here for a reason, and the reason was to make sure that this family was out of their home,” said Young.

While Christine was sitting outside in the cold and covered up with blankets, she called her niece in Tulsa to tell her what happened.

“Are you OK?” asked her niece.

“Yeah, yeah. I’m fine,” Christine told her. She was still in good spirits.

“You know that wood stove that we have? For some reason it started shooting out flames through the chimney part,” said Christine.

The Red Cross is providing a warm place for she and her husband to stay. Alex said they just celebrated 47 years of marriage last April. Soon they’ll be starting a new chapter in a new home.
