SCHERTZ, Texas (KXAN) — A 7-year-old boy was killed in a San Antonio suburb Thursday when four Bexar County deputies opened fire on a suspect with outstanding felony warrants outside of San Antonio.

Authorities were looking for a female suspect in her 30s involved in a vehicle theft around Farm to Market 1518 and Schaefer Road in the town of Schertz, northeast of San Antonio and next to Randolph Air Force Base.

When found by a deputy hiding in a closet, she allegedly told the deputy that she had a weapon and she was going to shoot the deputy. Authorities say she started running and the deputy called for backup. She ended up in a mobile home community about a mile away.

The suspect was trying to break into a home on Nu Pecan Grove when deputies found her again. After previously describing the incident as a possible exchange of gunfire, Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar said he did not believe the woman was armed when the shots were fired. A bullet went through the home, striking the 7-year-old inside.

“Something in the way that suspect presented to the deputies, placed these deputies in direct fear for their lives, they fired several shots each at the suspect,” Salazar said. “The suspect was shot at least several times that we know of, she fell there and died at the scene.”

The sheriff said it was not clear who fired the shot that killed the boy. Two adults and another child were also inside the mobile home with the boy. Authorities say there is no connection between the suspect and the little boy. No officers were injured in the shooting.

KXAN’s Erin Cargile spoke with the suspect’s mother who said she sends her condolences to the boy’s family and is criticizing the actions of the deputies.
