Austin launches pilot busking program to help promote music in city spaces

AUSTIN (KXAN) — The city of Austin is looking for a few good musicians to be a part of its paid busking pilot program.

The city recently launched the program within the Seaholm District as a way to draw visitors to newly opened public spaces and buildings in downtown Austin. Musicians who apply and are selected will receive “prime busking spots” through the Seaholm District.

All the musicians who are chosen for the program will be compensated through a one-time $150,000 funding from the Green Water Treatment Plant Redevelopment, which is earmarked for music programming.

“We are dedicated to the constant pursuit of sustainable living wage compensation opportunities for Austin’s musicians,” said Erica Shamaly, manager for the City of Austin’s Music & Entertainment Division. “The ATX Busking Program Pilot is a fantastic opportunity to pay local musicians an appropriate guarantee for their services, while establishing best practices to expand the program throughout the City.”

Musicians are encouraged to apply for the ATX Busking Program Pilot by submitting an application which can be found at http://www.atxmusic.org, for performance consideration. The city wants to have musicians set by spring 2018.
