AUSTIN (KXAN) — An east Austin man called 911 Thursday morning and alerted police to a man on his doorstep who had been shot in the back.

“He called 911 saying he had heard a gunshot — two gunshots — a little bit earlier, and at this point there was a man banging on the door and he believed the man to have a gunshot wound,” Austin police Cpl. Joshua Shows said.

The man was afraid to open the door, but when officers arrived to his home on the 3100 block of Lynridge Drive around 5:32 a.m., they found the man in the yard and started treating him for his injuries.

Austin-Travis County EMS says the man was taken to Dell Seton Medical Center. He was hit in the upper back, an injury that is critical and potentially life threatening. APD says he was taken into surgery.

Police do not yet know when the shooting happened or the exact area where the man was shot, but the victim did tell them it happened “up the road.” They hope to speak to him later today once he’s out of surgery to get more details about the gunman. As of this time, no one is in custody, but officers believe the gunman and victim did know each other.
