AUSTIN (KXAN) — A teacher at a northeast Austin middle school has been arrested on charges of an improper relationship with a student and continuous sexual abuse of a young child.
In an email to parents, Dobie Middle School Principal Jesse De La Huerta said the accused teacher has been on paid administrative leave since Oct. 31, the day the school became aware of the allegations.
The principal says the male teacher, identified in court records as 30-year-old Pedro Rosas-Martinez, has been recommended for termination.
According to a probable cause affidavit, AISD police received a report of a 12-year-old Dobie student who had cell phone video of a teacher “inappropriately touching her.” The video, reviewed by detectives, allegedly showed a man touching the girl inappropriately.
The victim told police this was done continuously to her since May 1, 2017 during her sixth grade school year. The incidents began again not long after the current school year started, the victim told police, adding that she returned to Rosas-Martinez’s classroom because she needed to be in ESL (English as a Second Language) classes.
She told police the last incident occurred on Oct. 31 — the same incident where the video was taken — and she reported what happened to the school.
An AISD police detective spoke with Rosas-Martinez the same day, and noted the teacher was wearing the same clothes as the man seen on the cell phone video. The affidavit states the voice of the man in the video also matched the teacher. The school directory shows Rosas-Martinez taught seventh and eighth grade Spanish.
He was booked into the Travis County Jail on Nov. 17, where he remains in custody. Bond has been set at $300,000.
Additional counselors are being made available to students at Dobie Middle School, located at 1200 E. Rundberg Ln., just west of Dessau Road. Principal De La Huerta said he cannot provide further details because the investigation is ongoing.
A meeting for school families will be held at 5:30 p.m. Monday in the library.
