AUSTIN (KXAN) — Thousands of runners burned off their holiday meal Thanksgiving Day, before even sitting down to the table.

The 27th annual ThunderCloud Subs Turkey Trot took place Thursday morning, the largest five-mile run in the state.

The run has raised more than $3.1 million for Caritas of Austin over the years, with 100 percent of proceeds going to the non-profit. Caritas helps people move out of poverty toward self-sufficiency.

“Thanksgiving Day has always been synonymous with the Turkey Trot,” said runner JT Sullivan. “So you gotta come out here and have a good time, run with people of Austin. It’s always a really great day.”

Last year’s event brought in more than $300,000, enough to help more than 100 families.
