AUSTIN (KXAN) — A man has been killed in what witnesses have described as a road rage shooting in northeast Austin.
Austin-Travis County EMS medics were called to the CVS pharmacy located at 1701 East Parmer Ln. near Dessau Road at 4:31 p.m. Tuesday. When officers arrived, they found Alfred A. Lockett, 48, lying on the ground outside of his teal-colored Infiniti sedan. Police say bystanders had pulled Lockett out of his vehicle to help save him when they realized he had been shot. Lockett died at the scene.
Witnesses told police they saw a driver in a red Toyota being followed by an Infiniti at high speed northbound on Dessau Road. When the two vehicles approached the intersection of Dessau Road and East Parmer Lane, the Toyota turned into the CVS parking lot, followed by Lockett.
When both vehicles came to a stop, police say the driver of the Toyota, a red 2010 Camry with dark tinted windows with black rims, got out of his vehicle and walked towards Lockett, who was still sitting in his car. Police say the driver of the Toyota pulled out a handgun and fired at Lockett, hitting him multiple times.
The suspect then got back into his car and drove away. The suspect is described by witnesses as a white or Hispanic man, approximately 5-foot-10 with a thin build and short hair. He could be in his late 20s or 30s.
Wednesday afternoon, police said the red Camry was found in the 2000 block of Yager Lane after the incident, just east of the CVS, with its license plates removed. Officers believe there was a possible crash between the two vehicles before the shooting and say there’s no indication the two knew each other.
“We’re still early on in the investigation, and homicide detectives are still talking to the witnesses and siphoning through video tape trying to find information,” said senior APD officer Jeremy Bohannon Tuesday evening.
Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call the Homicide Tip Line at 512-447-3588.
