AUSTIN (KXAN) — A driver died after authorities said he crashed into what appears to be an abandoned gas station on Justin Lane and North Lamar Boulevard.

It happened around 5:31 a.m., according to a tweet from Austin-Travis County EMS.

Austin police say Alexander Hopkins, 25, was driving south on N. Lamar Boulevard at a high speed when he lost control and hit the building. He was ejected from the car and died at the scene. Police report he wasn’t wearing a seat belt.

The southbound lanes of North Lamar Boulevard reopened around 10 a.m.

Police are asking anyone with information about this crash to call its Vehicular Homicide Unit at (512) 974-8255. This is Austin’s 40th fatal traffic crash this year, and its 42nd fatality. By this time last year, there were 41 fatal traffic crashes and 41 fatalities.
