AUSTIN (KXAN) — Austin police have identified the victim in a shooting on South Congress Avenue at East Riverside Drive Friday morning. Van Kevin White, 51, was shot and killed outside of the Congress Square II office building in the back parking lot.

The shots fired call came in around 7:10 a.m. at 611 S. Congress Ave.

“We had repeated calls for shots fired to 911,” says Senior Police Officer Melvin Moreno. Austin-Travis County EMS said they took White to the hospital with critical injuries. He died at University Medical Center Brackenridge.

Moreno says the area of South Congress Avenue where the shooting happened is usually a safe area so it is unusual to have a shooting there. “This is a high foot traffic area for tourists,” says Moreno.

A suspect is at large and has not been identified, but police believe the shooting was not random. Police do not believe the public is in any danger. Anyone with information on the shooting should call the Homicide Tip Line at 512-477-3588.
