AUSTIN (KXAN) — A defense attorney found dead Friday in southwest Travis County’s Oak Hill neighborhood may have been “targeted” and killed, the Travis County Sheriff’s Office says.
Sources have described the victim as a defense attorney, but authorities have not identified the man in his 40s.
Deputies were called to Rockwood Circle — located just off US 290 and Circle Drive — before noon for a “check welfare” call. Deputies say they knew something was wrong when they arrived. They entered the house and found the man dead. A sheriff’s official said, “He clearly did not die of natural causes.”
Authorities then got a warrant to search the entire home, located down a dirt road right off Circle Drive. KXAN’s Kylie McGivern spoke with someone familiar with the area who says the attorney has owned the property for a long time, but believes he was living in the house for only the past year.
The neighbor said the attorney would sometimes barter work with clients who didn’t have a lot of money.
Investigators would not say how the man died and a suspect has not been identified. The medical examiner was at the scene Friday evening; the victim’s identity is expected to be released once it’s confirmed and family is notified.
Depending on how the death is ruled, it could be Travis County’s fourth homicide this year. Last year, Travis County had 10 homicides, which was up from four in 2015.
