AUSTIN (KXAN) — A woman is dead and one person is in custody after a stabbing on South Congress Avenue.
Austin police say the woman was stabbed in South Austin, at the Heights at Congress apartment complex just before midnight on Sunday. Austin-Travis County EMS tells KXAN the woman, estimated to be in her 40s, was taken to the hospital with a stab wound to the chest. The woman was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Crime scene units did not arrive at the apartment complex until 6:30 a.m., more than six hours after the stabbing. The scene was cleared by 8:20 a.m. Officers say one person is in custody and charges are pending. At this time there is no threat to the public.
Our KXAN photographer at the scene said he saw police take children out of an apartment and put them in the back of a police car. Officers are not saying if it is related to the stabbing.
Over the weekend, a woman died in a South Austin shooting Sunday morning on Walton Heath Circle, near Onion Creek. Another shooting happened at the Yellow Rose strip club on Saturday night. The owner of the club tells KXAN News that a Yellow Rose security guard shot a man who tried to rob another man in the nightclub parking lot.
Digging into the homicide numbers in Austin from last year, the data shows a rise since 2015. According to the police chief’s monthly report, through November this year there have been 35 homicides. During the same time frame last year, there were only 20. However, there were 32 through November in 2014.
