AUSTIN (KXAN) — With the holiday season upon us, the Austin Police Department is reminding drivers to not drink and drive with their extended No Refusal DWI initiative.

The enforcement will run from Dec. 15 through Jan. 1 at 5 a.m. During No Refusal, officers can apply for a search warrant to draw blood from drivers who are suspected to be impaired if they refuse to provide a breath or blood sample.

“This holiday period is often associated with parties and gatherings in which alcohol is present,” said the department in a news release.

As of the first week of December, there have been 70 deadly crashes resulting in 72 deaths on Austin streets. At this time in 2015, there were 91 traffic fatalities in Austin.
