Will the Trail of Lights hit a record this year for the most marriage proposals?

AUSTIN (KXAN) — It’s the ideal place to take the kids, but Austin’s Trail of Lights is also becoming a popular spot for something else.

Mark Pascual’s friends caught his marriage proposal on camera when he asked his wife Kristine the big question on the trail in 2012. He believes there were three other proposals that same night.

Last year, Ceasar Jeffery had the same bright idea, but it didn’t go exactly as planned.

“Every time I got ready to propose to her she would say something and I would chicken out,” said Jeffery.

The timing was never right until the shuttle ride home.

“I was like, ‘It would be an honor for you to be my wife for the rest of my life,” said Jeffery. “I said, ‘I wanna know if you’ll marry me.”‘

The entire bus went silent, waiting for Michelle Avila’s response.

“I said ‘yes,'” said Avila.

It was their first trip to the trail, but now they plan on taking their family back every year.

So how many lucky ladies could walk away from the Trail of Lights with a new diamond ring this year?

Organizers say so far they’ve gotten 10 phone calls from people inquiring about it, but not everyone gives them a heads up about the surprise.

“I love it,” said Trail of Lights Foundation President Leah Davies. “I think it’s a total honor to be involved in someone’s memory that they’re going to have for their entire life, and it’s really something special we look forward to as well.”

One of her favorite stories involves a husband-to-be who went to new heights last year.

“He used rope lights to write out ‘Will you marry me?’  on the ground, and then took his soon-to-be-wife up on the Ferris wheel and pointed down,” said Davies.

For any guy considering popping the question at one of Austin’s favorite holiday spots, Jeffery has some advice.

“It’s different for every man. You’re going to be nervous because I was,” said Jeffery. “Trust your spirit and your spirit will tell you, ok, this is the right time. If you chicken out try again.”
