AUSTIN (KXAN) — While many people are rushing to finish holiday shopping, Austin police are issuing a warning for locals to slow down and stay safe.

Police say the easiest way to stay safe is to use HLT:

  • Hide your things
  • Lock your car
  • Take your keys

Thieves target vehicles with visible valuables. If you are making a quick trip into a store or waiting in a never-ending line for Hatchimals, police say to hide everything in your car from purses to phones and presents.

You should also make sure your windows are rolled all the way up. If you see someone acting suspiciously near vehicles you are asked to call 911.

Most of the same rules for keeping you car safe also apply to your home. For those who plan to leave for the holidays, police say to have a neighbor pick up your newspaper and mail. Piled up newspapers in a driveway are a huge indicator for thieves that no one is home.

Make sure you lock all doors and windows before leaving. Turning on a radio or television is a good way to trick thieves into thinking someone is home.

Police will hold a safety press conference today at 1:30 p.m.
