AUSTIN (KXAN) — A four hour SWAT standoff ended peacefully after a man allegedly pistol whipped a woman at an apartment complex.
A 911 call at 12:29 a.m. informed police of a fight between two women that caused a man to come out of his apartment and hit one of the women in the face with a gun. The man then barricaded himself inside his apartment at Twin Crest Drive and East St. John’s Avenue, not far from Webb Middle School.
Austin police called the SWAT team after the man refused to come out. The situation was over around 4 a.m. after police used tear gas or pepper spray. The suspect came out of his apartment, locked his door and then surrendered to police.
Officers are inspecting the man’s apartment after receiving a search warrant. The suspect has been booked into the Travis County Jail. So far they have not said if any charges have been filed.
The woman injured by the man is being treated at St. David’s Medical Center and is expected to recover.
Austin police say they have focused on this area to decrease crime.
“We’ll just continue to police this area, be visible and if the residents in the area have any concerns please reach out to us and let us know,” said Senior Police Officer William Costello.
About 10 nearby residents were evacuated during the standoff and were allowed to return once police received a search warrant for the apartment.
