AUSTIN (KXAN) — A Lake Travis mother and son killed in a crash on State Highway 71 were remembered on Thursday and will be laid to rest on Friday.

Lake Travis High School senior Santiago Vega, 17, and his mom Cynthia, 46, were hit Monday morning by a driver that police say was speeding and driving recklessly.

On Thursday, friends and family gathered at the area of the crash on Hwy 71 in the Spicewood area. A funeral for both the mother and son will be held on Friday in Marble Falls at 4 p.m. at the Wilcox Funeral Home.

The Department of Public Safety says the 29-year-old driver of a Subaru was driving westbound on SH 71 at a high rate of speed when he lost control at a curve, entered the eastbound lane and collided with Cynthia’s Ford Focus. Cynthia’s vehicle struck the eastbound guardrail and the Subaru ended up in a ditch.

Investigators say the driver of an 18-wheeler pulling a flat bed tried to avoid the crash in front of him but was unable to avoid the Focus and ended up hitting the car’s passenger side. The impact caused the Focus to flip onto its passenger side. Santiago and Cynthia died at the scene.

DPS says the driver of the Subaru has not been charged at this time, but that could change depending on the outcome of the completed investigation.
