LAGO VISTA, Texas (KXAN) — Police are warning drivers who have pumped gas at a Lago Vista gas station within the past 48 hours to call their banks.

Skimming devices were found on three pumps (#1, #2 and #7) at the CEFCO convenience store at 20520 FM 1431 near the intersection with Lohman Ford Road.

Lago Vista police alerted drivers to the skimmers at 12:30 p.m. on Thursday. Officers advised anyone who used any of the three pumps to contact their bank, cancel their cards and report any fraudulent activity.

The devices are usually undetectable by users, the FBI says. “The specific device used is often a realistic-looking card reader placed over the factory-installed card reader. Customers insert their ATM card into the phony reader, and their account info is swiped and stored on a small attached laptop or cell phone or sent wirelessly to the criminals waiting nearby.”

In May, skimmers were found at two Austin-area gas stations. The Travis County Sheriff’s Office warned drivers at the time to alert gas station staff if the card reader is loose. Deputies also recommended against using debit cards at the pump, because scammers can obtain pin numbers and drain individual accounts.
