AUSTIN (KXAN) — Downtown streets closed early Saturday morning while hundreds of peopled gathered to march in the 28th annual Chuy’s Children Giving to Children Parade.

Every year the parade brings together businesses, organizations and police officers in support of Operation Blue Santa.

During the Chuy’s Children Giving to Children Parade unwrapped-new toys are collected for Operation Blue Santa, which are handed out to Austin-area kids during the holidays.

This year APD hopes to serve thousands of families by providing toys and food.

Operation Blue Santa began in 1972 with charitable donations by the Austin Police Department, Austin Fire Department and other area business. Fifteen years later Chuys Restaurant joined in to sponsor the annual parade.

The parade features balloons, children’s entertainers, marching bands, holiday floats, and classic cars.
