TRAVIS COUNTY, Texas (KXAN) — A woman and a child were killed in a crash near Manor, Tuesday night.

Austin-Travis County EMS responded to the crash at 7:31 p.m. in the intersection of the State Highway 130 southbound service road and the U.S. 290 eastbound service road.

“From what we saw on the scene, the vehicle ran into the back of the 18-wheeler,” said Cpl. Shawn Williams, a spokesman with the Austin Police Department. The 18-wheeler was stopped at the light during the crash. The impact was so strong the driver, Kendra Gomez, 29, and the 1-year-old girl died at the scene.

Officers are investigating everything, including wet roads, recent construction and a possible power outage that may have wiped out the traffic signal.

“That’s terrible,” said a woman who did not want to be identified and who used to live next to the victim. “Everyone is supposed to be with their family, but not like that.”

The former neighbor said she avoid that highway for a slew of reasons. But, chief among this is big rigs.

“Tuesday morning, there was an 18-wheeler in front of me,” she said. “He was hauling rocks and rocks were popping off and hitting my windshield. I had to slow down and let him go.”

“Very tragic situation. You never want to see life, especially a child, end like this,” Cpl. Williams said. “We want everyone to get home safe, especially with the holiday.”
