EMIGSVILLE, Pa. (WHTM) – A 25-year-old Virginia man was shot and killed on Interstate 83 in York County after he dragged a trooper while fleeing a traffic stop, the coroner said.

York County Coroner Pam Gay identified the driver as Rasheem Singletary, of Petersburg, Virginia, following an autopsy Wednesday.

Gay said the cause of death is multiple gunshot wounds and the manner of death is homicide, but she pointed out that a coroner’s determination of homicide – or death at the hands of another – is not necessarily the same as a legal determination of homicide.

The trooper had stopped Singletary on I-83 South near the Emigsville exit Tuesday afternoon for an undisclosed traffic violation. When he fled, investigators said the trooper became caught on the left side of the car and was dragged while Singletary tried to crush his body against the center barrier.

The trooper first tried to use a Taser, but he then reached for his handgun and fired multiple shots at Singletary, who crashed into the back of a truck. Singletary died at the scene despite attempts to save him.

The trooper was treated for injuries at a hospital. He was released Wednesday.

He will remain on administrative duty pending an investigation.

The incident closed about four miles of I-83 southbound between the Emigsville and Strinestown exits for nearly six hours. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
