AUSTIN, (KXAN)– The Austin Police Department arrested Cristian Omar Caceras Avila, 25-year-old male, on Saturday after he confessed to robbing 8 local businesses within a 48-hour period.
On Wednesday at 6:21 p.m., Avila robbed Yari’s Beauty Salon at 614 E. St. John’s. At 6:38 p.m. he robbed Fujian Grand China Buffet at 8709 N. Interstate 35 and at 7:07 p.m. Avila then robbed Thomas Buffet located at 9710 N. Lamar Blvd. at 7 p.m.
On Thursday, at 6:37 p.m. Avila robbed the Metro PCS store at 614 E. St. John’s.
Avila committed four robberies on Friday starting with the Boost Mobile store at 9717 N. Lamar Blvd at 6:19 p.m. then the Art of Browz Shop at 9200 N. Lamar Blvd at 6:50 p.m. Avila then robbed two stores only a few doors away from each other.
He robbed the Payless shoe store at 1030 Norwood Park Blvd and as police were responding to this call, employees of the Metro PCS store, a few doors away, informed police they had also just been robbed by the same man.
In each case, police say Avila walked in, approached the counter, pulled out a gun and demanded money. When detectives interviewed Avila yesterday, he confessed to all eight robberies. He said he lives in Houston and drove in to Austin each day to commit the crimes.
Avila told police the gun he had on him was a B-B or pellet gun. He has only been charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in one of the cases, however, police said more charges could be filed. If convicted, he faces up to 99 years in prison.
APD said they expect to release more information about the case tomorrow.
