AUSTIN (KXAN) — A weekend blues concert in Austin is working to help local homeless veterans.

Karen Ingram with Red, White and Blues 512 and musician Jeff Plankenhorn joined us in the KXAN studio to talk about the House Our Heroes Festival. Their goal is to find homes for local veterans and provide them with the services they need.

The festival kicks off at the Stubb’s Waller Creek Ampitheater on Sunday at 4 p.m. Get tickets and learn more here.

The “concert with a cause” has partnered with Austin Mayor Steve Adler and the Ending Community Homelessness Organization to help keep veterans off the streets.

“The problem with veteran homelessness is not new. In Austin how they are taking care of it is innovative and exciting,” said Ingram. “Mayor Adler has pulled a number of different non-profits together and they have created a structure in place to keep homelessness for our veterans rare, brief, and non-recurring.”

So far they have housed over 700 veterans, but Ingram says this is an ongoing issue as military men and women are returning home from deployments everyday.
