HAYS COUNTY, Texas (KXAN) – Hays County voters passed two big propositions for the county on Tuesday.

Proposition 1 is a $106.4 million bond that will go to improving public safety facilities. The three primary aspects will be emergency communication and 911 response, law enforcement facilities and support and expanding the updated jail.

The current jail was designed 27 years ago and was built to handle far less people than are in the jail now.

Sheriff Cutler says the bond is necessary and something he has been pushing for, for months.

“We’re the fastest growing county in Texas and you got to prepare for that and with the aging facilities that we have, you have to address that and so it’s huge for us to pass these bonds,” said Hays County Sheriff Gary Cutler.

Proposition 2 is a $131.4 million bond that will go towards long-term transportation work. Combined with Proposition 1, financial planners estimate that they will not have to increase the current tax rate.

The money for proposition 2 will not only improve roads by adding shoulders and widening the lanes, it will also go to improving drainage, low-water crossings, bike-pedestrian improvements and environmental mitigation and conservation projects.
