AUSTIN (KXAN) — The Austin Fire Department says a fire that caused significant damage to a duplex in southwest Austin was intentionally set.

Firefighters from three departments responded to the home in the 6200 block of Hill Forest Drive just before 10 a.m. Sunday.

Officials say side B of the duplex was heavily damaged.

The Red Cross is assisting the four adults and three children displaced in the fire.

AFD says the fire is unrelated to one that happened on Halloween less than a block away.

Two fires in their neighborhood in one week has neighbors making sure they are as safe as can be.

“We ourselves actually went through and checked our gas meters because we all have natural gas here, to make sure those are working properly,” Julie Hayes said. “And then we also checked our fire extinguishers, which I would encourage everyone to do as well.”

Investigators have a person of interest but have not released details about what started the fire. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
