AUSTIN (KXAN) — A water main leak is causing some traffic delays around Maplewood Elementary School in central Austin.

The leak was reported around 7 a.m. on Maplewood Avenue near East 38 1/2 Street. Initial reports indicate before the leak was capped, the water was shooting 12 feet into the air.

As of 8 a.m., the water has been turned off but there is some damage to the pavement. Austin police are assisting with traffic around the school.

A spokesperson for Austin Independent School District says the leak has also shut off the water to the school. Crews are bringing in hand sanitizer, portable toilets and bottled water for the students and staff. Lunch will not be impacted and school is expected to operate on a normal schedule.
