AUSTIN (KXAN) — What started as a verbal argument in a parking lot along Interstate 35 in central Austin Wednesday morning turned into a deadly hit-and-run.
Austin police say the crash happened around 1:30 a.m. in the parking lot of the Capital Plaza shopping center in between the McDonald’s and Walgreens. Witnesses told police a woman, identified as 62-year-old Mary Piette, got out of her car just before another car pulled up.
The driver, along with his two passengers, got out of their car and “verbally engaged” the victim, say police. While it is not known at this time what was said, the driver and his passengers got back into their car and ran over the victim as they left the scene.
Piette was taken to the hospital where she died a short time later.
The suspect vehicle is described as a blue four-door sedan being driven by a white man.
Police say they don’t know a lot about Piette and her habits so they’re asking anyone with information on Piette or the incident to come forward. You can call the Homicide Tip Line at 512-477-3588 or Crime Stoppers at 512-472-TIPS or text “Tip 103” + your message to CRIMES.
In a phone conversation, family members of Piette say they are devastated. They say her brothers and sister live out of town, and that Piette lived alone.
