AUSTIN (KXAN) — It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas…

Austin Energy crews are spending the first day of November getting the Zilker moonlight tower to turn into the Zilker Holiday Tree. The 155-foot-fall Zilker Holiday Tree has 39 streamers, each containing 81 bulbs.

The moonlight tower in Zilker Park is one of the 17 original Austin towers still in operation. There were originally 31 towers that provided Austin its first urban lighting system in the late 1800s.

Once the tree is lit for the holidays, the two starts on top will be made out of LEB bulbs arranged to light up the number “50” in red.

The tree lighting event is scheduled for Sunday, Nov. 27, at 6 p.m. The tree will be on display nightly from 6 p.m. until midnight every night through Dec. 31. Austin Trail of Lights officially opens on Saturday, Dec. 10.
