AUSTIN (KXAN) — Several apartments are destroyed after a fire in South Austin.

The Austin Fire Department was called to The Woods on Barton Skyway apartment complex just before midnight Saturday.

Firefighters say a fire in one of the units spread to seven others, causing the roof to collapse. The first engine arrived on the scene within two minutes. It took 75 firefighters and 20 trucks to get the blaze under control.

Emergency crews evacuated the building. While no human lives were lost, two dogs and two cats died in the fire.

The eight apartments involved in the fire are destroyed. The Austin Fire Department estimates that the fire caused more than $1 million in damages. Apartment management and the Red Cross are helping the nine people that lived in the apartments.

Fire investigators have ruled the incident as accidental, due to improperly discarded smoking material.
