Learning More About Orange Wine

Master Sommelier June Rodil of June’s All Day stopped by the studio to talk us through a wine tasting, and show us some unusual varieties to try.

Wine 1: Dog Point Vineyards Sauvignon Blanc from Marlborough, New Zealand (poured by-the-glass at June’s). Most wine drinkers have had or at least heard of New Zealand Sauv Blanc and have an idea of what it should taste like. This is an organic and biodynamic producer, smaller production but still is friendly and recognizable to consumers. This provides a sort of “control group” for the tasting but still introducing a smaller producer and not necessarily a large, retail oriented brand

Wine 2: Scholium The Prince and His Caves Sauvignon Blanc from Sonoma (available By the Bottle at Jeffrey’s –our Wine Spectator Award of Excellence List). Also, Sauvignon Blanc but considered an Orang Wine. It’s a totally different flavor and style but the same grape! (Think of Orange Wine like steeping tea—you steep the juice in the skins) not something that is common for a long period of time in white wine—and more color and tannins are extracted the longer you keep them on there. A great optio for something different, the change in weather, different food pairings, something new, etc etc!

Wine 3: Glinavos Paleokeriso Semi-Sparkling Orange Wine from Greek (available by the glass at June’s) and yikes! Here’s something that’s totally different and weird that can show a style of white wine that is practically unrecognizable as a white wine anymore form a super obscure region of the world from an obscure wine grape – but it’s fun and adventurous and great for those who want to be so. It’s a conversation starter and also pairs well with foods.

Right now June’s is celebrating Wines of Chile and will be moving into Big Reds & Bubbles in mid November to celebrate the holidays.
