AUSTIN (KXAN) — Authorities are working to determine how a Travis County Sheriff’s inmate died while in custody last week.

The Travis County Sheriff’s Office says 46-year-old Dennis Rogers was found unresponsive in his jail cell on Thursday, Oct. 20. The department says Rogers, a transient in the area, had just finished his lunch and was actually set to be released from jail when deputies found him.

Rogers was booked into the jail on Oct. 14 to start his 10-day sentence for criminal trespassing. After being given credit for time served, he was up for release on Oct. 20

Initial information from the Medical Examiner indicates Rogers died of natural causes. Detectives reported there was no indication or evidence of traumatic injury or foul play.

This is the third in-custody death for the Travis County Sheriff’s Office this year. In June, Justin Dominguez, 24, died less than 24 hours after he was booked into the jail.
