AUSTIN (KXAN) — Dog lovers across Central Texas gathered to contest for the best canine mustache at the annual Dog Beard and Moustache Competition Satruday afternoon.

The Austin Facial Hair Club and the Austin Animal Center teamed up at The Mohawk for a 3rd year to help local pets in need of a forever home.

Categories for the competition include ‘Gnarliest Beard’, ‘Old Timer’ and ‘Dog and Owner Look-A-Like’ to name a few. Dean, a Shih Tzu, won this year’s ‘Best in Show’ category.

“I didn’t expect him to win, because there were dogs in costume and all that stuff.  But he did it, with a bow tie and a mustache,” dog owner Lexi Gleichner said. She has been growing Dean’s dog-stache for more than a year.

The funds go to the animal center, which provides shelter for over 18,000 animals each year and animal protection services across the city.
