HOUSTON (KXAN/KPRC) — A Houston mother is seeking justice for her child after a man may have tried to kidnap the baby. Surveillance video from the incident at the very least shows some unusual behavior.
In the video, a man can be seen walking up to Florence Monauer’s shopping cart inside the H Mart grocery store Saturday. With Monauer’s back turned, and without speaking to her—or getting permission—the man tried to pick up her 14-month-old daughter. Monauer realized what was happening once she heard the rustling of fabric to which the child was attached.
“I think that if it weren’t for the cover, he probably would’ve made off with her quickly,” says Monauer to KPRC. “I couldn’t hear a thing.” The man held on to the baby for a few seconds before Monauer turned around to see that he had her child in his arms.
Monauer eventually got her baby back but she said the man never spoke to her. Instead, he directed his conversation to the baby, in the video it looked like he was trying to get the child to high-five him.
Then, with no shopping cart and no merchandise, he walked away and out of the store.
Monauer shared the video she got from the grocery store on Facebook and by Tuesday it had 2.6 million viewed. In her post, Monauer said she initially thought the man “was just an over-friendly guy and maybe he didn’t understand what was appropriate and what wasn’t.” But after she started to process what happened she said she got angry for “letting him hold her for even a second.”
Houston police are investigating the incident as an attempted abduction.
