AUSTIN (KXAN) — A broken down Union Pacific train caused some issues for drivers in South Austin Friday.

The train blocked the intersection of West Oltorf Street at South Lamar Boulevard for nearly three hours. A spokesperson for Union Pacific says the train had to stop around 11:30 a.m. due to mechanical issues. The train was placed into emergency mode and another train was brought in to help push the train pass the intersection.

“We are working as quickly as we can to find a solution, we know blocking traffic in downtown Austin is not something we want to be doing,” says UP spokesperson Jeff Degraff initially. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
