BEAUMONT, Texas (KXAN) — A fight between two Beaumont students escalated when one of the students tried to run over another student with a car Wednesday, according to KBMT.
The Beaumont Independent School District Police Department says the argument originally started as a fight at West Brook High School’s parking lot, about an hour before school dismissal. Students who were aware of what was going pulled out their phones to record the fight instead of notifying police or school officials, police say.
When a teacher saw what was happening, police were notified and tried to break up the fight. According to KBMT, during the fight, a student jumped into someone else’s car and drove the car into the crowd. Cellphone video shows one student getting hit by the car and getting back up. After the crash, several people can be seen trying to talk to the driver and a garbage can was thrown at the car.
BISD Police Chief Roberto Flores, Jr. said his department has looked at the various videos and will be filing criminal charges.
“We’re just as horrified as the public is,” says Flores, Jr. “The behavior that was demonstrated there was unacceptable. It’s not just a mistake. It’s not a bad decision. It’s a criminal act.”
