DIBOLL, Texas (KXAN) — One-hundred yards might not seem far, but for a 100-pound pet tortoise it was a trip of a lifetime.

On Monday, officers with the Diboll Police Department in East Texas came across an unusual animal call. When they arrived at the scene, they found Sheldon, a 48-year-old tortoise, roaming the streets of Diboll. Sheldon’s owner says he was able to escape from the fenced back yard and when he got out, he made a run for it (or at least a leisurely stroll).

Sheldon was able to get about 100 yards away from his home when a citizen noticed the unusual pet on the road. Using an apple as a lure, Sheldon’s family was able to get him back to their car where he was loaded up and taken home.
