AUSTIN (KXAN) — The Texas African American History Memorial is nearing completion with the unveiling date scheduled for Nov. 19 at 10 a.m.

The new memorial by the State Preservation Board will be located at the State Capitol on the south lawn. The $2.9 million monument is dedicated to preserving the African American experience in Texas.

“We have walked these ground for years and talked about the lack of representation in terms of the monuments as it relates to the African American experience,” said Helen Giddings, Chair of the Texas Legislative Black Caucus. “We know in the beginning of the beginning that African Americans, even when they were in chains, helped to build this building.”

Austinites will be able to see the full spectrum of history from exploration, to slavery, emancipation, and achievements in art and science. Standing at 27 feet tall, walking down Congress Avenue towards the south side of the capitol the monument is impossible to miss.

Since 1983, the State Preservation Board has been working to preserve Texas history at the Capitol, Governor’s Mansion, General Land Office Building, Texas State Cemetery and the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum.

“It is about time that we do have a monument honoring the works of African Americans,” said Texas NAACP member Yannis Banks in June 2015.
