LEANDER, Texas (KXAN) — Leander Fire Department hosted dozens of people at one of their fire stations throughout the day Saturday, showing them what it takes to be a firefighter for a day.
The event is all about educating the citizens firefighters serve about what they do every day.
Participants got to hone in on their firefighter skills. They practiced putting out a fire with a hose, repelling down a building and moving through a smoke filled room, and dressing in firefighter gear.
The event was free to everyone 18 or older in the fire district.
People that went said going through the drills helped them see what a hard, and sometimes scary, job it is.
Anne Heiting, an elementary school teacher, was a firefighter for a day as part of the event.
“I can’t wait to get back to school and share all of this information- even with my students,” she said.
Bill Gardner, Leander Fire Department Chief, said they hold the Firefighter for a Day events twice a year.
