BEAVERTON, Ore. (KOIN) — Two children are dead after an apparent murder-suicide in Beaverton Wednesday afternoon.
The shooter was 36-year-old Lakalo Kawika Enfield, who police say killed his 6-year-old son Lakalo Vergara Enfield and 8-year-old daughter Lehua Elaysea Enfield before turning the gun on himself.
A female relative reportedly called 911 after she found the victims inside their apartment at the Redwood Apartments on SW Hall Blvd. and Greenway.
When officers arrived, they found what appeared to be 3 dead victims.
“We believed at the time that the adult male was absolutely deceased due to the injury and trauma to him,” officer Jeremy Shaw said.
Per police protocol, they backed out of the apartment to avoid contaminating the murder scene. From outside, officers heard rustling followed by a single gunshot.
The tactical negotiation team later reentered the apartment and confirmed that all 3 people were dead. Investigators believe the man woke up and took his own life.
Police said they responded to the same apartment on Saturday, October 1, for a domestic violence call.
“Our hearts and minds and thoughts go out to the victims and to the victims family,” Shaw said. “This is a tragic thing for everybody, not just our officers, our community and we understand that so we all need to heal.”
Neighbors are struggling to deal with the terribly reality that something like this could have happened in their community.
“Just to hear about something like this happening is… blows me away,” Josh Bliesner said. “It’s crazy”
Neighbors say the area is family-friendly and the sound of children’s laughter can be heard throughout the day from the parking lot to the playground.
“You see families walking around, little kids all day. There’s a beautiful park out here,” Bliesner said. “Let alone a father and his children? That’s extremely heartbreaking.”
Those who spoke to KOIN 6 News after the tragic events Wednesday didn’t know the young victims or what lead their father to do the unthinkable, but the Bliesner still feels sorrow for those children and the man who pulled the trigger.
“Just makes me wonder, how hard was his life at home or how hard was work getting to him or how hard was his relationship with his kids?” Bliesner said. “I mean, there’s so many different factors to put into it and it just really breaks your heart. It really does.”
