AUSTIN (KXAN) — Light Up the Night was held at the Long Center, Monday.

The event, which in part celebrates survivors of domestic violence and their family members, hopes to bring more attention to Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

The gathering also marked Unity Day, which began in October 1981 in an effort to connect domestic violence advocates across the country at a local, state and national level, according to the Survive2Thrive Foundation.

“Please help us celebrate this under-served community of survivors of domestic violence,” the organization said in a statement. “This night will give them the empowerment and unified voice they so desperately need, being celebrated for their resiliency, resourcefulness, and recovery.”
