AUSTIN (KXAN) — The Austin Police Department is warning people to be on guard for scam calls claiming to be from the city of Austin.

The department says while no official reports have been filed, they have been made aware that some people in Austin have gotten calls regarding the collection of delinquent fees.

Even more concerning, the calls appear to be from legitimate city phone numbers beginning with the 947 prefix. Police say these numbers are “spoofed” online and are not traceable. Officers say the calls usually originate from foreign countries.

If you receive a call like this, police say, ask questions. Get the caller’s name, title and phone number and ask to call them back. If you receive a call like this and feel it is part of a scam, you can call 311 to file a police report.

Many KXAN Viewers in the past year have also written to us complaining of constant scam IRS calls. If you ever get a scam call claiming to be from the IRS, follow the important reporting steps found on our website here.
