Austin celebrates International Day of Peace


AUSTIN (KXAN) — Wednesday, Sept.  21, the United Nations is hosting their annual International Day of Peace.

This year’s theme is the Sustainable Development Goal of building blocks for peace. The idea is to strengthen peace around the world.

Students at Montessori schools in Austin and across the world are going to sing a song to honor the peaceful day. It is called “Light a Candle for Peace.”

“Let us all work together to help all human beings achieve dignity and equality; to build a greener planet; and to make sure no one is left behind,” said UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon on the UN website.

In Austin, Mayor Steve Adler, Police Chief Art Acevedo, musician Jackie Venson, and local teen poet Sabeen Noorani will celebrate Peace Day in Austin. The conference will start at 10 a.m. in front of Austin City Hall.

Celebrating peace around Austin: 

  • Amy’s Ice Cream offering Peace Day Austin flavor, Reese’s Peace at all location
  • ZACH’s Topfer Theater will project images to celebrate peace in Austin from dusk till dawn
  • UT Tower Bells will ring at 11:55 a.m. followed by a moment of silence
