SAN MARCOS, Texas — Three council members walked out Tuesday evening before the vote over a controversial new HEB in San Marcos.

The council members motioned to postpone the vote, saying the process for the new store wasn’t done properly.

Four council members voted to continue with the proposed store, at the corner of Hunter Road and Wonder World Drive. That’s across from the Purgatory Creek Natural Area.

Many say they’re concerned about flooding. Critics argue there are other locations that would be a better fit for the proposed store.

A protest earlier this month called for the plan to be thrown back to the city’s planning and zoning commission.

Protest organizer Jennifer Fischer said, “We think that it’s important for them to remember that there are other properties, even within a stone’s throw, that would be very suitable and would be less of an environmental impact.”
