AUSTIN (KXAN) — Austin police say a disturbance between a man and a woman led to a SWAT situation at a southeast Austin home. Police say a 72-year-old woman was taken into custody at around 10:30 p.m., more than seven hours after the incident started.
The Special Weapons and Tactics team was called to Allison Drive, just west of the intersection of East Oltorf Street and Montopolis Drive, at around 3:18 p.m. Monday.
A man inside the home left earlier in the day following a domestic dispute, but the woman wouldn’t come out of the house, authorities say. After she brandished a weapon, police considered her a barricaded suspect. The woman, identified by police as Gladienne Hartzler, has been charged with aggravated assault on a police officer. An officer at the scene did not say what led to the aggravated assault charge.
During the incident, police were heard ordering a woman barricaded inside the home to “put the gun down and come out the front door.” Police gassed the house to force the woman outside. They were unsure how she was able to withstand the gas so long before eventually leaving the home unarmed.
